A circular economy has a significant role to play in climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as in strengthening economies that are recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic. Transitioning to a fair and carbon-neutral circular economy in which waste is reduced as much as possible has the potential to transform societies as they move away from viewing well-being as based on consumption and fossil fuel use.
In a circular economy materials and products stay within the economy for as long as possible. Waste and the use of non-renewable resources are minimised, and end-of-life products are used to create further value through repurposing or recycling. There are major economic benefits to a circular economy, and there are opportunities to boost innovation, growth and job creation through transition to a circular economy.
This online event on the circular economy will bring together policy-makers, business leaders and influential thinkers to share circular economy transition experiences in South Africa and in Europe, and to discuss future orientations. The event will also showcase inspirational circular economy business cases and projects in South Africa.
